The Hungerhill Fruit Tree Project propagated 1000 apple and 1000 pear trees to be distributed freely throughout the community and wider area. We propagated around 20 varieties each of apples and pears, made up of local, Victorian and newer varieties recommended for their ease of growing and reliability based on local conditions.
The majority of material was collected from trees growing on the St Anns Allotments in 2010. A nursery plot was established on the site for the young trees.A chip budding propagation technique was used with the expert assistance of Frank P Matthews Nursery of Tenbury Wells.
If you are interested in having a go at fruit tree propagation, visit the chip budding pages on the the Royal Horticultural Society website. It provides information and step-by-step instructions on the technique of chip budding.
