STAA is a charity based at St Anns Allotments, Nottingham which works to:
- promote the natural heritage and history of the site;
- encourage allotment gardening and
- provide education, training and personal development opportunities.
In pursuit of these we manage a range of activities based variously at our Community Orchard, Heritage Gardens (Oliver’s Plot), Nursery and Urban Nature sites. These activities are carried out by a small team of full and part-time staff and are variously funded by several charities, trusts, local businesses, and government. Most recently we were successful in winning a three-year programme of funding from the National Lottery’s Reaching Communities programme.
About STAA
We were formed originally by a group of tenants who campaigned successfully for the restoration of the allotments and we have been actively involved in the site’s redevelopment over the last 10 years.
Allotment tenants are still heavily involved with STAA, but when we relinquished the management of the allotments we decided to convert to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and consequently we are now looking for trustees to complement and strengthen the skills and experiences of the members of our existing Board, so that we can better realise our charitable aims.
What we’re looking for
We are passionate about the value that these inner-city allotment gardens can add to our local community. We are keen to hear from people from a variety of backgrounds, but specifically on this occasion our particular interest is for candidates with experience in:
- financial management and planning particularly in the charity sector and/or
- involvement with local community organisations
If you live in St Anns as well, then that would be a real bonus.
The role of the trustee is a rewarding one. Meeting as a Board twelve times a year, our trustees ensure that STAA delivers on its ambitious vision and charitable objectives to improve the quality of people’s lives by promoting the maintenance of sustainable allotment gardens, along with allied green spaces that deliver environmental, social and economic benefits.
With the guidance of our manager, Jo Lees and her staff, the Board of Trustees sets the overall strategic direction and provides scrutiny of our organisation’s processes and decisions. Trustees also ensure standards of governance are upheld as well as assessing the organisation’s business development, risk management, performance management and internal control. Our trustees are key to ensuring we continue to remain a viable organisation and stay on track to deliver our charitable objectives.
