You may recall earlier this year we ran a little campaign to get votes towards our entry for a Severn Trent Community Foundation Grant.
Whilst we weren’t successful in winning the total £20K, as runners up we still received a £1k award which we’ve been able to spend on resources for our Urban Nature wildlife project.
We’ve focussed on our ‘pond plot’ throughout, and the wonderful Urban Nature volunteer team have raked, cleared, dug and built a beautiful development of the area.
We have new benches, a pond viewing platform and wildlife information signs – complete with bee hotel features!
This makes the plot so much more usable – and we have gained further funding from Natural England’s seed corn fund to invite groups that don’t have as much experience or opportunity in engaging with nature to come and use the space.
It’s not just about infrastructure though, we’ve also been developing the space for wildlife – and the Severn Trent award has also bought a variety of plants and bulbs. We’ve carefully selected some feature wildflowers to add colour through the seasons, as well as more food for our pollinators.
It’s been a joy to develop the space – we’ve been spoilt – holding sessions amongst dragonflies, bumble bees and birds throughout, and we look forward to many more opportunities in sharing this space.
