I’d like to challenge the idea that Winter is dreary and miserable – hear me out.
My mum loves weather. She loves looking at rain and skies through the window, but she also likes being out in it. She’ll go for a walk in almost any weather, the wilder the better. I asked her why she likes Winter so much and this is what she had to say –
“I think I like Winter because I was born at this time of year. We are Winter people. Birthdays and Christmas make it a special time of year for lots of our family. I also prefer the cold weather, the Winter light, that Winter sun, bright but cool, snow and frost and Wintery walks. What’s not to like!”
When we were growing up in Lancashire (one of the wettest places in the country), we’d just wrap up warm and head out the door. It was a slight surprise to me in later life that other people were taught to stay indoors!
Another thing we do that goes against the common perception of Winter is to appreciate how beautiful it can be. I absolutely love the silhouette of bare tree branches against the crisp blue Winter sky, and the darker days afford the opportunity to see the sunrise and sunset in the same day – around 8am and 4pm respectively. I love how quickly the sky can change from the palest blue to cool yellow, and then to fiery orange and bright pink.
The robin is one of the few birds to sing all year round, and there is no greater sound of Winter than the robin’s silvery song. Speaking of birds, Winter is arguably the best time of year to see them, without leaves and foliage interrupting your view.
And finally, as a knitter, there is no better time to wear my favourite, snuggly jumpers and cover myself in hats, scarves, and gloves. If you’re looking to take-up a new hobby, might I suggest knitting or crochet as a way to learn a new skill and make sustainable gifts for friends and family next Christmas?
I’m not saying that Winter isn’t cold, but I hope I’ve given you a different point of view on Winter being something that can be enjoyed and not endured.
