I moved into my house 20 years ago and enthusiastically installed my greenhouse and raised beds. Many solutions to pigeons, squirrels and other crop-raiding critters have been tried with little success. My heart fell when, after much lockdown attention, my red current and gooseberry bushes fell to the same fate, even before ripe this year!
Already a gardener, I started volunteering for STAA in May to meet people post-lockdown and learn more. Seeing their vegetable patch netting on the Nursery garden was a lightbulb moment. STAA use woven netting, cable ties that glide over rails, and shoulder cup hooks for tying down. This design has re-energised my hope for future crops.
So I have purchased:
- 2 x 1.2m support poles for height
- 1 x 2.4m support poles for length
- Cable ties
- Heavy-duty woven netting – do not use plastic netting unless very patient!
- Shoulder cup hooks
Approximate cost £25 each per bed.
Maybe this would work for you too?
